PENSACOLA, Florida (AP) -- Nice shootin', Rex!

A man who tried to shoot seven puppies was shot himself when one of the dogs put its paw on the revolver's trigger.

Jerry Allen Bradford, 37, was charged with felony animal cruelty, the Escambia County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday. He was being treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound to his wrist.

Bradford said he decided to shoot the 3-month-old shepherd-mix dogs in the head because he couldn't find them a home, according to the sheriff's office.

On Monday, Bradford was holding two puppies -- one in his arms and another in his left hand -- when the dog in his hand wiggled and put its paw on the trigger of the .38-caliber revolver. The gun then discharged, the sheriff's report said.

Deputies found three of the puppies in a shallow grave outside Bradford's home, said sheriff's Sgt. Ted Roy.

The other four appeared to be in good health and were taken by Escambia County Animal Control, which planned to make them available for adoption.

it's illegal to shoot dogs? uh oh, my dad's going away for a long time then. It's a fact of farm life. Sometimes you have to shoot a dog. what are you going to do, pay $100 to the vet to put each dog down if it's hurt, or becomes a Turkey eater (we had a turkey farm).

libs run the urban areas, you can't shoot dogs in urban areas

i don't think you would be charged in Fremont County Wyoming for shooting dogs

Thats one way of looking at it. Or you can use logic.
[*]In urban areas there are thousands of people wanting pups - you may find none in a rural area.
[*]In urban areas there are places that will take the pups for free and even kill them humanely if needed - not true in rural areas.
[*]In urban areas a stray bullet is much more dangerous in a rural area.
[*]Gunshots in a rural area will raise no eyebrows, you can't say that in an urban area where cops will be called, buildings evacuated, etc.

A fact of farm life? Please...

To quote Bob Barker, "Have your pets spayed or neutered". I'll give you killing a dog that needs to be put down anyway (old age, illness, etc.) - the thought of shooting one is disturbing in a way for some (mysefl included), but whether it's the vet putting it down with a syringe or a farmer using his gun, as long as the dog doesn't suffer it's fine.

Killing a dog because it becomes a "Turkey eater" is retarded. Chain up the dog and attempt to train it, or give it up to a shelter for adoption - don't kill it because it instictively wants to hunt/kill. Too many people consider pets and animals to be expendable - if they become in inconvience, just kill 'em... maybe I'm taking your post too far, but it's an issue that bothers me.

What this guy in the article was doing wasn't even about dogs behavioral problems, though... he was too irresponsible to keep his animals from breeding. Period. It's like teenage pregnancy - you know the consequences, so if you take the risk, you should be prepared to take responsibility for the outcome. Same thing here - if you don't prevent your animals from breeding, then be ready to deal with the potential costs of their offspring.

I grew up living out in the country in Iowa. We had a lot of farming families around us that were irresponsible with their pets. It's too bad this guy didn't get shot somewhere else... like in the balls... that'd be perfectly ironic.
