And this is what I can't believe about cat owners: they will utterly change their lifestyles because their cats are too stupid to not knock things over, and they're doing it for an animal that couldn't care less if they're there or not.
My friend has to do that too: candle in a jar, paper towels in a cabinet, everything small and glass has to be put away.
How is this different from dogs? Dogs still knock crap over, tear sh!t up, and tear up the yard. Most dogs just can't/won't get on the top of counters and shelves, so they have less opportunity to knock small stuff over.
My parents have two small dogs (one of which would be with me if our landlord allowed pets

). Their day consists of:
1) Waking up in my parents bed and at least one of them licking my dad in the face to wake him up. My mom doesn't bother b/c she says he's a lost cause (he never wants to get up in the morning and Jazmin and Buttons seem to know what time he needs to be up).
2) They run through the house like bats out of hell for a few minutes. When my dad is ready for work, he takes his briefcase out to the truck and Buttons and Jazmine follow along and do their business outside. He comes back inside, they follow.
3) Both parents at work, Buttons and Jazmin typically sleep on the sofa or watch TV (parents leave the TV on for them).
4) Mom comes home around noon and dogs go out to pee/poop again.
5) The rest of the day the two fight each other, fight over toys, love all over my mom and make "mommy sandwiches" as my mom calls it (my mom sits in the recliner and either dog is laying on left or right of her).
6) Dad comes home around 5-6 and the dogs go out again. Rest of the evening is spent fighting each other, eating, napping, running through the house, looking for attention, etc
But Buttons is truly my dog. Whenever I come home to visit, I might as well be the only person in the universe. She won't leave my side for two minutes. She demands to sit on my lap while I'm on my laptop, she demands to sit in my lap while I'm at the dinner table eating (she just curls up in my lap and goes to sleep and doesn't beg) and demands to sleep in the same bed as me.
