-k- This is a little weird:

My dog mounted a female the day before yesterday, and after the deed was done, he couldn't get "it" put away. He has a large knot at the base of it that seems to be preventing it from retracting. I called the vet already and he said that I should just separate him from the female (done) and it should go away. 24 hours later, it's still there. I called the vet back, and he said that he really doesn't know what's going on and what could be done, and that he'd call a collegue of his and get some more advice. Does anyone here know anything about this and have some suggestions. He looks like he's in pain. Poor pup. :(

Spray him with cold water down there or take him out in the cold. If not, you may need to take him to the vet to have it.....drained of excessive blood.

I believe wolves in the wild get stuck together after they fornicate. I think after the guy dog does the deed, he has to stay stuck in the female. It's some wierd evolutionary thingy.

It's to ensure that he passes his genes on and not some other dog.

What it sounds like is a stricture or adhesion of some sort that is preventing venous blood from flowing out of the penis at a faster rate than arterial blood is coming in, keeping the penis semi-erect. This is not uncommon, and can happen even in uncircumcized babies. Usually, you just grab the foreskin and give it a nice tug to 'assist'. If you feel uncomfortable with this, take it to your vet, but not the dumb ass vet who couldn't figure this out over the phone.

That happened to my dog once. He was just like standing there stoned for like a few minutes. Actually I don't know how long he was at that state, but somehow it went down by itself. Scary stuff I tell you; and it's NOT a very funny sight.

It is normal. Your puppy will be fine. :)

Normally, the "knot" forms inside the female, and prevents the male from leaving for some period of time. It is just to help ensure fertilization will occur.

I would call a different vet, though. 24hrs does seem a little excessive.
