Dog problems...

OK...so I'm not sure if any of you are dog whisperers or whatever...but maybe you can reccomend a good service/book/show...

Situation: I have a male miniature dachshund, long-hair, black and silver, yay. He is almost one year old. He is pretty good about going outside, though he does have his occational accidents inside and when he gets excited (visitors) he leaks a little bit, as all small dogs tend to have this problem. All of that is fine and well, but he has a barking problem I cannot control. If I leave (or attempt) to leave my room...he will bark, and never stop. When I leave the house he barks until I get back home. He only does this when he is in his cage, but if i leave him out he will pee on something or chew something up. I don't have a fence so I can't leave him outside. This is getting to be a big problem because he has stopped responding to the methods I have tried.

So far I have:
Tried ignoring him to see if he will stop, no luck.
Tried spraying him in the face with water, works temporarily...he will continue barking when i close my bedroom door.
Spanking him...this works temporarily...sometimes if i get real mad at him he hit his nose...he will stop for a couple hours (so my roomates say) but then start up again.
I have also tried this citronella (SP?) spray thing...every time he barks it sprays him, but it doesn't work very well.
I try moving his cage into the living room where he can see what is going on, no luck at all.
I've tried putting a blanket over his cage, that just makes it worse.

I do not enjoy spanking him and am not an abusive person by any means. Spanking has always been a last resort method and it really bothers me sometimes...i'm not a PETA person or whatever, but it just makes me feel bad if i hurt him or something...he is kind of small after all, and i am quite big...so :p

People have told me to try the fallowing:

Shock coller: when you think he is being bad, you hit a button and it shocks him. I don't know if i want to do this because i dont want to hurt him and i'm not sure if it will work, and it is quite expensive
Bark shock coller: shocks when he barks. Same reason as above.
Watch the dog whisperer: can't seem to find when it is on and what station...
My dad told me to beat the crap out of him until he stops...o_O This is pretty much never going to happen...
I tried that "tsst" thing i saw on southpark (making fun of dog whisperer) and he friggin HATES it. (You pinch his neck and go 'tsst') But obviously i can't do that all day.
Doggy school: I Will try if it actually works, but it is kind of expensive...

So...what do you people suggest? Anyone had a similar situation and had some good results?

Thanks

a bark collar isn't bad...I tried ours on myself before using it on our dog. She was a quick learner, and she only tested it twice. She is MUCH better now.

Dogs are meant to be outside.

If you really want to solve the problem, take him out and shoot him.

Otherwise you are going to have to give him a good knock on the head when he does something that you don't want him to. But you can't be lax about it. You have to continue to do it until he gets it. Also if he's too old, you're never going to get the stupid thing to stop pissing in the house.

Read Don't Shoot the Dog. It's the animal training bible and will teach you about operant conditioning. A bark collar is actually a decent idea. The reason it works is that it enacts a "positive punishment" the instant he does what you don't want him to do. Positive meaning something (electric shock) is added to his environment, Punishment meaning it reduces the likelihood of that behavior in the future.

Here's a good website too: http://www.wagntrain.com/OC/index.htm#Operant

Some dogs simply just bark and not a damn thing you can do to stop it.

Typically any dog smaller than a football is nothing more than a little yipping sh!t machine.

Or just giving it away. Bullets cost money.

I wouldn't ever give that dog to someone else and cause them to have to deal with it. I wouldn't even give it to someone I hate.

$50 is a small price to pay for some peace and quiet without having to get rid of your companion. Just wait 'till you have a serious vet bill!

hmmm..it's a Petsafe PBC-302. Maybe it was that much, but I'm usually pretty cheap, so I wouldn't have thought I'd have paid that much. It was worth it though. You could buy it, and assuming it works and he learns, you could resell it on ebay.

I'd sell you ours, but we're breeding her soon, and will possibly keep a puppy.

Was going to say, we got a bark colar from walmart. It's cruel, but it even works on cocker spaniels (VERIFIED)

some will....if he whines loud enough. Otherwise, you might want to get one with a remote.

Shock collars do work.. The dog will understand that when it has the collar around its neck that it will hurt to bark, so it won't bark that much.
