Dog owners: Where do you go to purchase your dogs?

I'm thinking of getting a dog for the kids sometime this year and was curious where you guys go to get your dog.

Looking to get myself a boxer locally from a breeder. Will find out tonight if I get one or not 🙂
 
The local humane society - they're on petfinder just like thedarkwolf posted.

Great dogs - Douglas a 2 y.o. walker hound, and T.J. a 6 month old lab/walker hound mix. Think someone mistreated Douglas a bit, but he's coming around. And overall they are some of the best dogs we've had.

The local one here, you can even leave a "wanted" card with specifics for what you're looking for. While we were there they were intaking a puppy that matched what someone wanted. They were calling them before the original owners left. Though, I REALLY want a English Bulldog. The manager has seen 1 in the past 5 years. And told me flat out if they got 1 it would be going home with her or one of a couple of others there that want them.

 
We got ours from a breeder. She's a pure bred Lhasa Apso. Pretty good family dog if anyone is looking at one. Very playful, good at watching kids/property (she barks at strangers, but it's not an annoying bark), EXTREMELY smart (this is actually a downfall- she keeps outwitting me 🙁 ). $800+extras though.
 
I got mine from a shelter...purebread Dalmation but no papers. Most beautiful dog I've ever seen....but omg SO hyper.
 
Breeder, pure bread only. Or from some really rich guy who breeds German Shepards and gives them away for free.
 
A real breeder or shelter. NEVER buy a dog from a pet shop. Ever heard of puppy mills? I've got a pure breed Jack Russell Terrier and a Golden Retriever from licensed breeders. Very healthy dogs.

Exactly what I was going to say. Reputable breeder or shelter/humane society/rescue. No pet stores or backyard breeders - we do not want to support puppy mills. :| (Sorry, I feel strongly about this. 🙂)
 
I think we've narrowed it down to a mini-dachshund or a shih-tzu. I'm gonna keep looking at that petfinder site. Someone here at work recommended to also check the local paper. I might do that as well. I want a dog that is kid friendly and can stay inside with us. Don't really believe in leaving them outside.

If you ever saw a PrimetimeLive or 20/20 on puppy mills you would NEVER buy from a pet store.
