1. I'm shocked that the New Yorker published this.

2. I'm not shocked that it was written by Lena Dunham.

3. I don't understand how any self-respecting person could be with someone who would write such an article about them.

4. I can only imagine the Jewish community is pretty pissed about this.

lighten up, Francis. It's called satire.

I can only imagine that the Jewish community, known for a diverse and boundless sense of humor, would find this funny.

Maybe not all of them. http://www.kveller.com/lena-dunham-equated-jews-to-dogs-thats-not-ok/

I'm Jewish (by heritage anyway, not religious) and I don't think it was funny. Mostly just stupid and confusing, and if it's satire I'm not sure what it's supposed to be satirizing. I'm not sure how much of a Jewish community there really is though...

EDIT: The ADL also didn't find it funny: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/adl-slams-lena-dunham-dog-784891

Boyfriend sounds like a pussy but I feel bad for him.

Her boyfriend in question is musician Jack Antonoff from the band Fun.

On item number 31) In addition, he is openly hostile toward the Hasidic community, focussing most of his rage on their bulky (but chic) fur hats.

Seems odd that The New Yorker would allow a misspelling of the word focusing.

I didn't find the article funny, as it set itself up for a list full of Jew punchlines, but ended up mostly as generic boyfriend punchlines, so it really failed to deliver on it's premise. If you invoke the Jew, you better dive headfirst into the stereotypes.

Of course the article not being funny doesn't bug me, but the double standards of the outlet do, as I could never see them publishing a similar article with black in place of Jew.

if that were true it might be because black is a race, while jewish is not - it's usually defined as ethnocultural or ethnoreligious

Anand and I built the same home theatre rooms in our homes ... I copied his design.

I come here a lot but mainly read the articles on the front page.

But that's not the criteria for people on stormfront or a variety of other anti-semitic people. There's a long history of Jewish people being persecuted not because of what they believe in but because their parents are Jews (and most likely most of their ancestors, going back a while) and they're thought to be innately bad people no matter what their actual culture or lifestyle is.

Stereotypes of Jewish people being cheap, greedy, manipulative, and so on transcend culture (as do positive stereotypes, which are still stereotypes). And while visible characteristics in appearance aren't as generally pronounced as they are with black people there are still some.

interest groups....always known for their robust sense of humor. :D

whether or not the article is actually funny is one thing. Claiming offense over this is just overly PC horse sputum.

I thought it was her from Game of Thrones, stopped caring when I realized I mixed up Lena Headley with Lena Durham.

Why should anybody care what Stormfront thinks of the definition of what a jew is? I have never once visited that horrible site but I have seen stuff pictured on reddit and they appear to me to be a hate group and nothing more

Judaism is a religion, and yes there is an accompanying culture and there certainly was a jewish race at one point in time... not today. Most jews in the US do not trace their lineage back to Israel at all, but to Europe or Asia. Some communities in ethiopia and the middle east still represent a cohesive cultural and genetic stock but that can be diluted at any point by non-jewish 'jews' from europe.

I struggle to see how jews can claim they are still a 'race' when their appearance ranges from nordic-appearing jews in Ukraine to black people in Ethiopia. If you compare these two groups genetically you would find they have about as much in common as mexicans do to phillipinos.

More to the point, it really doesn't matter whether they are a race or not because they certainly are culturally different from non-jews. I personally don't find what this woman wrote to be particularly offensive, it seems to be just a general list of jewish stereotypes, some good and some bad. I think somebody could certainly take offense to it, and I wouldn't fault them.

You're not getting the point. In Nazi Germany do you think Jews were spared if they denounced any kind of religious beliefs and completely culturally separated from anything that could be seen as Jewish? No, anyone who could be deemed to have any Jewish ancestry was part of the Jewish problem. You can say who cares what they think, but you should care if they're committing violence against you, and while that's not much of a thing in America anymore (fortunately) it still lives on in other parts of the world.

I'm not claiming there's any single Jewish race that has purity going back to antiquity in the middle east, then again that's true for most groups (many black people in America have a lot of white ancestry, some who identify as black or are identified by others as black have more white ancestry than black, that doesn't necessarily spare them from racism).

I struggle to see how jews can claim they are still a 'race' when their appearance ranges from nordic-appearing jews in Ukraine to black people in Ethiopia. If you compare these two groups genetically you would find they have about as much in common as mexicans do to phillipinos.

That may be true, but there are still distinct genetic subgroups within all people calling themselves Jewish, and at least some of them are targets of prejudice based on being a member of that genetic group, regardless of any facet of how they live their life. That is racism, plain and simple.

IMore to the point, it really doesn't matter whether they are a race or not because they certainly are culturally different from non-jews.

You shouldn't assume that Jewish people - again, for many this will mean nothing more than having Jewish parents - are necessarily part of any kind of culture. You shouldn't assume people are different based on nothing but that.

I personally don't find what this woman wrote to be particularly offensive, it seems to be just a general list of jewish stereotypes, some good and some bad. I think somebody could certainly take offense to it, and I wouldn't fault them.

I don't think Lena Dunham's article was especially offensive either, or anti-semitic. If anything I found more negative stereotypes about men than Jews (or maybe Jewish men), and it came off as pretty self absorbed and whiny.. much like a lot of Dunham says and does.

But I don't think promoting stereotypes are ever really a good thing, people should be evaluated as individuals and not assumptions based on what others think the group is like.
