I will still accept dog kisses. The odds of getting this are very low, first the dog needs to have it in their mouth and on their tongue, second you need an open wound, third you need a compromised immune system.

Well it would be safer. BUT the bacteria is commonly found in the mouths of humans as well so if you have a dog that has a compromised immune or drinks heavily it might suffer the same terrible fate.

It is interesting that people come in contact with dogs and cats and that this situation is so rare.
I wonder what the follow up story is.
I am sure the doctors took some blood to do research to find out why this particular bacteria the poor guy caught was either so aggressive and because his body reacted so extreme.
Poor guy lost all his limbs. I feel for him.
