dog keeps scratching carpet

Just recently my dog has been scratching at the carpet. Its almost like she's digging, only in the house. When I come home I see where she has scratched and I can hear her sometimes at night, just before she goes to sleep.

Anyone know what the problem would be?

I have NEVER heard of a dog doing this. It's probably serious. I would do something if I was you.

Kidding aside, she may be trying to get at something.

Now the truth:

This goes back to nature. Your baby is building a nest by smoothing out the imaginary hay so she can lie down in comfort.

Many dogs, including my Fred, do this often.

my golden does the exact same thing right before she goes to bed. she'll scratch at the floor trying to find a good spot, then just plop down and pass out.

This is normal don't worry about it all my dogs do it and have done it.

Same thing as circling around in circles before they find a place to sleep for a long time.

Instinct.

But there could be something they smell that they are trying to get at also.
