I went out there and chased it away, but I am not sure if it is getting the message, what should I do if it comes back to teach it a lesson? SO that I can make sure that it doesn't do it again

arsenic..... j/k Just slap it once it goes back. Or better yet, don't have it accessible to the dog.

Get one of them huge trash bins and just throw your trash bags and stuff in there.

If it's someone's dog, tell em that the dog is bothering you... if it isn't. Call the pound.

Pour something smelly like ammonia over it (but have some sympathy for the guys that dump your trash). ;)

Only put good stuff in there, then he will eat it all and you never have to drag it out to the curb.

Ammonia is a good choice----vinegar should also work

Go catch yourself a skunk for dinner, and save the "stink pouch". Take it, and empty it into a spray bottle, and spray down your garbage can! He will stay away from it!

Sprinkle it with ground pepper. When it gets in there he'll sneeze his head off. Probably teach him a lesson he wont soon forget.(Used male verbage for simplicity)

DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT TRYING THIS!, unless you want to end up smelling like a skunk yourself. Ammonia or mothballs are better solutions. Or throw a coffee can filled with a few rocks (and with the lid on top) at the dog (not intentionally trying to hit him). It's an old training tip, mainly used when dogs bark incessantly, but it may scare him off.

Pee all over your can so he knows it's your territory and not to mess with it. Just don't let the garbage men see you doing it or they might stop picking it up :).

maybe you should put out a bowl and some food inside. He's probably just hungry.

would you like it if somebody sprayed your eyes with vinegar if you were just trying to find something to eat because you're starving?

Leave a nice, inviting...MOUSETRAP on the top. One *SNAP* and the dog will never try that again. The likelihood of the dog being hurt badly is very slim (our dog was snapped a couple times without incident), and the lesson lasts a lifetime.
