Dog has been vomiting/having diarrhea for a day

We took her to the emergency animal clinic since she was puking every 5 minutes. She stopped for about an hour so we decided to just take her home. Since we have only given her water and ice cubes and she is still having diarrhea but she stopped puking.

The vet thinks we should do bloodwork and an xray, $500ish. I don't have an extra $500 to spend right now. She says it could be kidney/liver problems or she swallowed something that is blocking her stomach/intestines or she just ate something bad.

Background on the puppy: Zoe, a 1 year old Havanese, has done this once before when we think she ate something bad but it only lasted 6 hours, not a day. Also she has been bleeding she is about to be in heat (her first).

I have to decide to wait a little longer or take her in and spend $500. Any vets out there or experienced people have an informed opinion?

Let's be clear: I do not think she is in immediate danger or else I would pay anything to get it fixed, since she saw the vet and the vet wasn't seriously worried about immediate danger I feel ok. I am only asking in case maybe someone has had a similar experience and could shed some light on what it might be. Even if I can decide if its one or the other it would save me $200.

edit:My Baby

UPDATE: We gave her more water and a little rice last night (sunday) and although she is still having a little diarrhea she is peeing regularly and she hasn't thrown up in over 24 hours. We will continue to wean her back on to rice and chicken and see how that goes. Thanks for everyones input!

Update2: Zoe hasn't thrown up in over 4 days and she finally had solid stool tonight. My gf took her to the vet and they gave her some antibiotics in case it is a stomach illness and said if that didn't work it was most likely a parasite. Her appetite, energy, and other habits are back to normal. thanks to all the well-wishers and for the advice.

My dog had similar problems. Puking blood and excreting bloody feces. Turned out his body was flooded with cancer, we had to put him to sleep. :(

Blood work for your dog would probably good idea.

Be very careful of dehydration. Your dog sounds pretty sick.

I can't offer any advice, but I know I'd be beside myself with worry.

Hope your dog feels better soon.

Yes, please look into the pet food recall that's going on. Most major news sites will have an article on this on their front page.

At 1 year old (tomorrow actually) I would be shocked if it was cancer but I am sorry to hear about your dog.

My puppy is on dry food only and from what I understand that was canned food only in the recall, thanks that was the first thing my mind went to.

That sounds likea possible culprit except I think the vet would have mentioned a fever since she did get her temp taken. However Since they say for that just to not give her food and that's what I am currently doing, I hope it is that or just that she ate something bad.

I am trying to keep her as hydrated as possible with ice and little sips of water. I have been keeping an eye on her heartbeat and breathing.

I don't know, I was trying to find out stuff like that because I know in humans after food poisining or for just a stomach virus vomiting/diarrhea for a day or 2 is normal. But I have no idea for dogs.

My dog had something similar about a month and a half ago. Don't feed the dog at all until it quits puking, but keep it hydrated. You can give imodium AD (give them like 1/4~1/3 of a pill) to stop the diarrea. Some people say to give them gatorade but my dog only wanted water when he was sick. Bottled or filtered water is best in case the dog is allergic to something recently put in the city water supply. You can feed plain white rice with boiled chicken or similar when puking stops for a while.

My dog was sick for several days and didn't get better so I had to take him to the vet who ended up giving him a shot and some prescription med and food. They didn't know what was wrong with him except stomach virus.

take it to the vet.

but at any rate, as long as you keep letting it have water or ice, it will continue to throw it up. You must withhold all food and water.

but go to the vet.

At that age I would guess she ate something bad. If she's stopped throwing up, just keep an eye on her. If she wants to drink, let her drink. If she continues puking, I recommend taking her to another vet. $500 for xrays and blood work is insane.

Yes, she is current on all vaccinations including parvo/distemper.

Sounds like good advice, the Vet did say rice and chicken is easier on the stomach. I always give her filtered water since I always have it on hand.

She hasn't thrown up since about 4 am but she has had some diarrhea since then and I have been still giving her ice/water. We just gave her a little more water and we will see what happens. And I will take her to the vet for sure tomorrow just trying not to have to pay the emergency clinic costs.

How much does the dog weigh? You can give it bits of pepsid...our dog got (snd still occasionally gets) about 1/4 tablet 2X daily. (that's for a 10 lb dog.) and was recommended by the vet. REALLY helps with the stomach discomfort.

My dog is the same, 10.5 lbs. I will definately try the pepsid.

when my dog got the similar set of symptoms, he had been given some chocolate by an innocent child who did not know better.
We gave him pepto bismol, and fed him boiled rice and boiled hamburger mixed together. He stopped up in a day or so.

Something like that was my first thought, but we weren't aware of anything and she vomited 8 times in a hour so we took her in. She hasn't vomited since 4 am now but she is only drinking water (nothing to eat). I am definately going to try pepto or pepsid and slowly introduce rice and bland chicken/beef as suggested.

pepsid, NOT pepto would be my recommendation. Pepsid is great for neutralizing the acid in the stomach.

I'd shop for another vet.

It's $500 for x-rays and bloodwork since it could be either kidney/liver problems (bloodwork needed) or she might have swallowed something large that is blocking the stomach or intestines (x-ray).

And it is not my vet, I took her to the emergency clinic since it was sat night and my vet was closed. I will be taking her to my vet tomorrow if she throws up anymore.

You vet should be able to do the blood work and X-Rays for much less than $500.00. The emergency clinics always cost a lot more.

Did you dog recently get shots or get flea and tick dose? If it happened after either of those your dog is likely suffering poisoning.
