Has anyone done any research into what a dog dreams about? Usually when my dog dreams, I see her leg muscles twitch as if she is running. Sometimes she makes this chirping sound which is like a stifled bark. This morning she woke me up with her tail wagging very enthusiastically against my knee but she was sleep. Do they dream about past experiences or some primal instincts that she may have never done?

Obligatory pic in sig.

Oh squirrels, definitely ;). I don't know, sometimes my dog looks like he's trying to run when he dreams. When he barks it sounds like a whooping sound, much like Curly does from the Three Stooges.

There is a lot of speculation on just how conscious other animals really are. Consciousness is believed to be directly linked to the size of the cerebrum. Consciousness is basically being able to understand mental objects and models. Humans are the only animals that we know of that are self-conscious.

That being said, animals probably dream about daily life, as we do... but there is no sense of self.
