Many See I.R.S. Penalties as More Affordable Than Insurance:
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/04/us/many-see-irs-fines-as-more-affordable-than-insurance.html

Mr. Murphy, an engineer in Sulphur Springs, Tex., estimates that under the Affordable Care Act, he will face a penalty of $1,800 for going uninsured in 2016. But in his view, paying that penalty is worth it if he can avoid buying an insurance policy that costs $2,900 or more. All he has to do is stay healthy.

“I don’t see the logic behind that, and I’m just not going to do it,” said Mr. Murphy, 45, who became uninsured in April after leaving a job with health benefits to pursue contract work. “The fine is still going to be cheaper.”

For 2016 and beyond, the penalty will be $695 per adult or 2.5 percent of household income, up from $325 per adult or 2 percent of household income last year.

And from here:
http://leavittpartners.com/2016/02/14440/

According to UnitedHealth Group, the lack of young and healthy enrollees contributed to a $720 million loss related to their individual exchange business.

When insurance companies pull out of Obamacare exchanges, obamacare = defacto dead since there are no plans being offered?

or are all insurance companies required to offer at least 1 plan in Obamacare?

Of course! Why would someone have a heart attack when they could just not have one? Why would someone slip and break their leg when they could just not do that?
Why would someone get hit by a drunk driver when they could just not do that?

Genius.

Oh man, he should also choose not to get Cancer too. Kidney stones? Who needs that. Someone send that genius a letter and make sure he knows to opt out of all the sicknesses and diseases.

It is sound conservative thought-processes like this guy that ensures a conservative utopia will thrive in the US (or, well, will be selected out of the genepool)...but one of the two!

Anyway, this guy in OP doesn't realize that strategy didn't work for this guy in SC:

It's been D.O.A. before this POS was legislated. Studies show that less and less people are going to the doctor because of blazing high premiums. It did the exact opposite of what it intended to do. The few highlights of it (no caps on care, no preexisting conditions) don't outweigh the cost to fund it. But please list the 2 people who got cancer that it helped. lol

Should any of that befall him he'll be able to mooch off the rest of us, I'm sure. He's banking on it.

Yea, cause it would take a good 1/2 day hospital visit to offset that ~$3000 annual cost.

gop plan: stay healthy, don't get in an accident, you'll be swell!

Those who opposed Obamacare will see this and think "Yeah, Obamacare is going to die!"
Those who supported it will think, "Yeah, now we have evidence that Obamacare didn't go far enough and we can replace the system with single-payer government-controlled insurance!"

The fact that health care is on the same level as a vehicle is completely insane. There is no rational way to believe that a single payer universal system is somehow worse than anything that encompasses not-single payer universal.

If you apply Mr. Murphy's "logic" then he should not buy ANY insurance of ANY type.

A hope for the best, plan for nothing is a pretty dimwitted philosophy. I'm guessing Mr. Murphy is still very young and hasn't had much life experience yet.

BTW $2900 probably wouldn't even cover a sprained wrist at today's medical expense level, much less a heart attack or cancer.

I think many mentioned this could be a possible problem. Why force a 20 something in good shape to get insurance? kids are idiots and don't thinkt hey need it.

Because shit happens? Also, the guy in the OP's story is 45.

However, when I was 22, I broke my jaw. I'm pretty sure the bill was over $2900. However, I've usually had very good insurance, so nothing for me

Everyone has catastrophic health care coverage. In a true emergency, you go to the hospital, they have to take you in, then if you can't afford the bill, the bankruptcy laws are there to protect you. ;)

And they love insurance companies on top of all that. Mental disconnect is mind boggling lol

Remember when ACA was fully paid for and it was going to significantly save money by lowering emergency room visits? Ah...those were the days!

I didn't say it was a good idea. Hell i can't remember a time i haven't had more insurance then needed.

What i said is some here said something like this can/will happen. you have some people that think they are indestructible or rarely get sick so don't think they need it.

I'm really not suprised to read about this. same reason younger kids don't save for retirement.

I remember having a debate with a staunch conservative friend of mine who happened to have no health insurance, yet steadfastly opposed the concept of an insurance mandate. When I of course pointed out that he is effectively using the public trough as catastrophic insurance, and is essentially a moocher much like those "others" he loved to deride, he took great exception. Quite astounding to observe this level of cognitive dissonance in person.
