does your tolerance for pain ever get you in you trouble?

When I was a kid I had a pretty bad ear infection. The doctor asked why I didn't come in when it first started hurting. I said that it only began hurting the night before, which left him utterly confused. He said the infection/inflammation must have started at least two days ago, but because of my apparent high tolerance for ear pain it didn't bother me until it got really bad. I made it out alright though.
