Does your surfing at work hurt your work productivity?

I can't surf during work anymore, its been killing my focus and work productivity. :( As a result this is going to be my absolute *last* AT post and non-work related internet page refresh during work hours (until 2pm).

EVER!

(atleast this year :p)

How about others - regardless of whether you can get away with it or the rules permit etc. - do you feel your time spent (non-work related) surfing measurably affects your work productivity in a negative way?

If I weren't surfing the web, I'd be doing something equally unproductive. Anything to avoid doing actual work. :D

No, of course not.

I made it thru school (pre-internet) listening to music on headphones, passing notes and reading science fiction during class. Why should work be any different?

A little bit. But I think it also helps productivity a bit, because otherwise I would go nuts with these projects.

Plus, it is important that I research on-line for tech related solutions.

Now, if you are saying ATOT lowers my productivity, now that is a totalyl seperate issue. ;)

What do you think I'm doing now. I said something would be done at 10 and I probably have another 5 minutes of work left (15 since I'll surf another 10).

The question assumes that there was some level of productivity on display prior to neffing on ATOT. :D

It depends on what I'm doing. If it is strictly repair work, then it doesn't really hurt productivity because I'm usually waiting for something anyway (parts, scans, etc). If I'm working on new builds and have all the parts, then it can hurt it a little, but I try not to waste too much work time.

What really confuses me, though, is when we (tech's) are on support phone calls, they frown on us browsing the web, etc while we are talking to the customer. It doesn't distract us, it doesn't take away from what we are doing, it just gives us something to do to stop us from slamming our heads into the wall with some of the customer's we talk to!!

Not really, if I get stuff to do, I will do it, I will browse a bit inbetween, but otherwise, I'd just go insane I think.

Plus, the internet plays a big role in some of the things I have to do, I have to research stuff and so on, and looking for code info/tips etc.

I voted 'Yes, some', as it does a bit.
