The thread about bagging food made me wonder how many people here shot at places that also unload their food carts for them.

No, we really need RFID tags on all grocery store items so you can just push your cart through a giant scanner and then bag it up quick.

They do if you ask them, unless they are polite they ask you sometimes.

I don't pay for it, infact here the unload everyones carts and bag everyones items. You don't even ask, they just do it. You push your cart to the pay station and the cashier unloads your items and scans it, while someone else starts bagging it. They then places the items back in your cart for you. It is wonderfull. All free of charge. Although this supermarket does charge a little more than others, but the service and selection make it so worth it.

I go to two chains regularly, depending on who has the better sales. One unloads, the other doesn't.

Are you handicapped where you really need someone to unload your groceries for you?
Where I shop they will unload for you if you ask them, elderly handicapped comes to mind, but WTF? If you are young and healthy why in the fuck would you want someone to be your own personal servant?

The one I used to work at, the bagger/cashier would help unload the cart if there was a ton of stuff, the person was not standing in the way in the lane, and if there had been no one in line before the person who's stuff was being unloaded.

They do it for all people. They don't ask actually. Because you can't unload your cart here. It is a service they provide. Even if you only have 3 items in hand held basket, you will hand the basket to them and they will take the items out of it. Even if it is 1 item, they will take it out of the basket for you.

The place I usually go to does. They installed some self-checkout lanes a while ago though, so I usually just use those. Guess I'm paying higher prices and doing all the work myself, but it's not too bad, and I like shopping there, so oh well.

There is no explicit charge. They don't say $1.00 to unload your cart and bag.

When I go to the grocery store, I generally cruise around in one of the go-cart style grocery carts, so yes, MOST stores unload my groceries for me, bag my groceries, and even take them to the car for me. Doesn't matter if I shop one of the "retail-priced stores" like Safeway, Raley's, or Save-Mart, or if it's one of the "discount" grocery stores such as Winco or Food Maxx where you'd NORMALLY bag your own.
I've never asked for such service, and often tell them, "Thanks, but I've got it," but when I'm really hurting and the wife drags my fat-lazy ass to the store anyway, I'll occasionally let them take care of it.

The Ukrops grocery store chain, run by the Mormons, hire mentally, and/or physically handicapped people to take your cart out to your car, and help you load. They are NOT allowed to take tips. Though I am still fairly physically fit, I find it hard to ever decline their offers of help, it is their job, and they seem to enjoy doing it, always bright, cheery, and friendly. And if it costs me a few pennies more for my groceries, SO BE IT!!! and call me a moron.

We have a couple regional supermarkets that do this. Dillions has people who bag and offer to take out groceries for you, but they don't force it.

Personally it kind of drives me nuts, I'd rather just carry out my own groceries. I think it's a nice service for older or disabled people who may have difficulty doing that stuff on their own, though. And high schoolers have to earn gas money somehow. :p

It's called cost allocation.

Yeah, the bag boys make easy targets when they're lifting a paper bag full of veggies into an SUV.

It's called subsidizing.

Hey, I got an idea. I'll sell you my car for $225k, and throw in a free house!
