On Lab Computers

Well does it?

Here at the college I'm at you aren't allowed to use any version of AOL instant messenger wether it be the Java version - AIM express or the downloadable version. They say it's distracting to the users around you, they have a whole user agreement about it, you aren't allowed to be in chat rooms and you aren't allowed to play games, but I see users around me doing both, and niether really bother me. I can see where they wouldn't want you to download AOL instant messenger but common, AIM express is strictly over the web.

so what does your school allow?

I'm gonna play devils advocate, even though I myself have run into these restrictions and at the time disagreed I can understand the logic behind them.

Lab computers are for doing work, writing papers, doing research. NOT chatting, playing games, or any other personal buisness, if you want to do that kind of stuff, get your own computer to do it on. don't do it where it doesn't belong. the labs are set up as a work environment, not an internet cafe.

our lab computers all used to have aim installed, but now on most of the computers it is gone, so i just have it installed on a zip disk and i pop the disk in and run aim

we had computers in our cs classes and people used to cheat with AIM. that was so funny. the teacher would sometimes leave the room and all you hear is light keyboard tapping.

Yeah, it allows both.

...but did you all know that @ Bob Jones University they don't allow AIM b/c they can't REGULATE what their students are saying (like they do with e-mail)???? Nuts, huh?

I'm not saying that using the computer lab for chatting on the internet is wrong, but I go to a community college, I commute to class everyday, it's not like they have docking ports for you to bring your laptop along and plug in, otherwise I would. I have breaks, I'm an art major and it's not like I have a bundle of homework, so when one of these two or three hour breaks come along it doesn't make much sense to go home just so I can come right back, that would be pointless. So why should those of us be bored to death on our breaks sitting in a mall or eating lunch when we can be on instant messenger, what you think is a waste of time may not acctually be a waste of time to me, for the most part, most AOL IM conversations end up being just a waste of time, but it's how I choose to use my time so it isn't a waste to me. As far as I can see, it doesn't bother other people because they use it as well, they too use it even though according to the user agreement they aren't allowed to, you can use it, as long as you don't get caught. Just because you aren't allowed to doesn't mean that you can't.

(BTW - I'm not on AOL IM right now, I had a scare the last time I was)

I'm sure all schools don't approve of it. Mine does as well, but they don't really care..

The c drives are all ghosted back to an original image over night

see, that's the thing... why can't we use express? It's basically just the same thing as going to a website, I fail to see the problem.

All lab computers here have MSN Messenger installed on them. They encourage the use of it to help each other, etc. Also that way you can get everyone on your list in case you need some help at home.

That's a good idea. It seems to be on all the computers here too, even though it clearly states no chatting whatsoever on all the computers here. Yet I see people using MSN and ICQ all the time.. I do now and then too, but it doesn't work on all the computers so I don't always bother.
