Does your MSN work if you have a custom email addy?

For MSN's services to work, you must have a "passport" enhanced or enabled email which is just some BS saying you need to have a msn (or hotmail) addy.
 
I use my MSN and Yahoo account to use MSN messenger. Today I tried logging on with my MSN one and it said it was all busy try later then with my Yahoo it worked fine.
