Does your Maxtor DM+9 drive run freakin' hot?

I'm trying to gather some data on whether the 200GB SATA DiamondMax+ 9 drives run hot or if I just have a problem drive.

Mine runs about 15C over case ambient, and that's with excellent cooling. The drive broke 50C yesterday on the warmest day of the year, and I know I'll exceed the safe threshold of 55C before too long.

The OTHER drive I have in the system, a 160GB PATA DiamondMax+ 9, runs very cool, just barely above case ambient. It consistently stays in the 30's (C).

I've tried swapping drive positions in the case, so it's not that.

No matter what I do with the 200GB drive (which is 3-platter, versus the smaller drive's 2-platter, if that matters), it's consistently hot.

If you want to read the S.M.A.R.T. temperature data for your drive and don't already have something else that does it, Dtemp works well:

Thanks

I have the Maxtor DM 9 PATA drive and it does run very hot, I had to buy a hdd cooling solution to keep it within my acceptable limits.

200GB? Do you know if it's 2 or 3 platter? I think you can tell by looking at the second digit of the serial number, which reveals the number of heads. With that information and the overall size, you can determine whether you have 68GB or 80GB platters.

My WD1200JB and WD800JB were hot to the touch the other day. I ran down to CompUSA and bought some 5.25 bay HDD coolers, they come with three 40mm fans. After I got everything setup I let my computer run for an hour and the hard drives were cool, not burning hot! Remember, electronics are like humans, if you think it's too hot, then they're overheating.

120GB DM+9 running at 28C with a fan slowing pulling air on it.

My 1st gen Raptor, same location in comparision is running at 37C.

My 80GB DM+9 runs warm to the touch, as does my Raptor in an Antec Sonata (no front fan).

I have two DM9+'s, one 120Gb and one 60Gb, both with 2Mb cache. They're mounted one above the other, with a gap in between (drive, drive space, drive), and a 1400rpm fan in front of them. Both are reading 30C, and never break 35C.

Of course, this doesn't really relate to your 200Gb drive much; is it hot to the touch?

By comparison to the 160, noticeably, yes, but it's not like those Seagate Barracuda SCSI drives I had in the '90's, which were so hot you couldn't touch them for more than a few seconds.

It would be interesting to see what it does with active cooling (which I've heard is noisy), since without it, even when the room is in the lower 60's F, the drive will be, at the very least, in the lower 40's C (and the 160 would be in the upper 20's C at this point).

If this is normal, Maxtor got sloppy with the 200. Unfortunately, their T.S. has no idea if it's normal or not. They can't even tell me if I'd get the 80GB/platter version as a replacement.

i've had a few calls on people calling about the temps of these larger drives myself. (work for mator t.s.) seems lot of times its just a matter of case air circulation... but also imo...50c (w/o being accessed/moving data) is gettin kinda warm just idling, specially w/ a fan blowing over it? the prob is...a lot of times..."maxtor" wants their *error codes* before can just replace. 🙁 personally i'd be disapointed myself...but really when it comes down to it, the hdd IS working correctly, w/o issues...so what can a guy do... =\ replace a *working* drive and possibly get the same results? from the companies stand point it is a waste of money..from the customers it could be just a waste of time..

from experiance most of the drives i see (any manuf), i run a raptor and ibm in my own machine, never seen temps over 35c ish if i remember correctly. have ran a cpl maxtors in other systems at work and 'under load' would see it get up around 45c ish (before adding a fan to blow over them) . .

and a lot of times, on the replacement, we really do have no idea what will go out since it comes down to whats "in stock" at the time, which TS knows nothing about..

also...i don't have a prob w/ ppl rippin on maxtor.. 😛 just giving you what little info i have really. hehe cuz honestly, i've ran ibms for most my systems. (cept for one quantum--which mind you is still up and kickin 🙂 ) have my first wd (raptor) and so far so good.

Hey guys,

I have a serial ata maxtor 120 gig with the 8 meg cache. How do I check the temperature on that beast. I have the asus 865PE non deluxe mobo if that helps.

first post has link to what your looking for...
otherwise mobo monitor should work as well...with a bit of tweaking.

Hey Rotax, it's nice to see those affiliated with vendors visiting here. I'm still up in the air about whether to do the RMA or just trying to find one (probably temporarily) locally.

Yes, the temps I'm quoting are at idle. I do have my front case fan installed (both front and back fans are big 120mm's), but because of the way the drives are mounted in this case, it's not blowing on the drives. Its main purpose seems to be to move the air along within the case for the back fan to exhaust. Installing this front case fan really didn't make more than 3 or 4 degrees C difference. I'm sure the drive would benefit from something blowing directly on it, but it's unfortunate that this is an issue in the first place, since the other very similar drive in the system isn't even close to needing this kind of attention.
