Does your hardrive constantly crunch?

These servers are driving me crazy. All the drives start crunching on off about every second like a bunch of quartz clocks in unison. It's really annoying. Obviously they cannot be turned off. I notice most ntfs boxes will do this when downloading a big file. Is there a registry key or something that can change the frequency that the buffers are commited so this can be made to sound more random and less rhythmic? Like rain on a bimini top! -M

What OS?

Could be idle defrag ... data sync ops if they're a RAID.

I can't even hear my system running, so I don't know if mine crunches. 😛

Windows 2003 Server Enterprise edition.

The XP and 2000 workstations do it too. One system has a pair of 146GB 7200 RPM U320 Baracuda's (the first giant SCSI disk) and they are loud like a 440 big block with 11.5 compression running on 90 octane with no timing retard. Like a can of marbles being shaken. :Q -M

Some Hitachi and IBM drive models are known for ceaseless crunching for no reason. Some have firmware patches available.

Suggestion: do not try living in the same room with your server. Move it to an air-conditioned space of its own and keep it down around 60°F. Or move yourself out of the server room.

I like the sound of rain.

Moving away is not an option and yes the sound of rain is great.

It seems like only the microsoft ntfs volumes do this. It would not be bad if it wasn't so rhythmic. This is the kind of stuff that makes people go whacko, grab a huge sicklebar and slash 10 throats before falling asleep.

Hi, Seagate does have a built in self diagnostic that runs like you describe. I have two other brands that also seem to have it. Luck, Jim
