I've heard a lot of American schools do it on a pass fail basis for first year, but no mark is recorded.

I don't know how long this lasts, but a friend as Cal Tech said his first year wasn't graded.

UW-Madison - yes they count

Texas A&M has a weird system, they just implemented it, and I don't like it. During your first year, they offer grade exclusion - if you make a D or an F in a class, you can have it excluded from your GPA calculation. It will still be on your transcript but not in the calculation. You can do this for up to 3 courses (of any hour lengths). The problem is that it only allows you to exclude D's or F's - encouraging ppl to try to fail when they could make C's. I know of several ppl personally who have done this, since the policy went into effect last fall (it was available for the current students to retroactively do it as well). I think anybody should be allowed to exclude any mark - why cannot I not exclude a B when its hurting my GPA?

Michigan State University... yes it counts... and it's usually the worst for most because most people spend it partying.... which I do, but only on weekends.

Damn, that would really annoy me.

I hate it when being mediocre is rewarded over actually trying. For example, I remember in high school, you could redo some assignments if you got below a certain mark. If you redid the assignment, you could get a much higher mark. However, if you got above that redo-mark on the first submission--but still did poorly in comparison to your usual work, you're screwed.
