Does your city come together for sporting events?

Not a spots fan of any type myself but I certainly live in a sport city. With the Canucks in the Stanley Cup the whole city is behind the team. You see people wearing jerseys everywhere you go and lots of cars with little Canuck flags on them. The city buses alternate their destination signs with "Go Canucks Go", as well as other electronic public signs.

Does your city get together in a similar way for their home teams? If so post some examples. What sights are common? What times of the year?

Not really. We don't have a tonne of sports here in SLC, UT. We have the Jazz, and hte basketball fans get pretty jazzed up about them. Then we have Real Salt Lake (soccer), and the only Real game I went to there were about 7000 people (out of 1.0mil). Aside from that we have a few minor league teams, including a AAA baseball team the Salt Lake Bees.

So no, we don't come alive. I used to live in San Francisco and during baseball season that city lives and breaths the giants. It's awesome.

I don't know about sports but half the damn island showed up for the Brewfest a few weeks ago.

(We really need to get that emoticon back)

hmmm
the nearest city to me with a pro team is raleigh with the hurricanes...id say there was a pretty good showing of canes fans for the all star event this year. this state is still mostly a college sports enclave, however, with UNC and Duke and such.

where i work, greenville, definitely shows off purple and gold for the local uni football team...but i dont care about college football

You mean the "bandwagon effect", where everyone in the bar wearing their new jersey suddenly knows everything about the team?

Yea SoCal has been known to win some championships, see it all the time.

Remember I'm not into any sports. So I suppose it should but it doesn't.

Let me put it this way, our mass transit buses say "Go Phillies" despite it still being the regular season. Buildings are lit up red. The building by the major train station in Philadelphia is lit up with a big red "P" quite often. Phillies shirts/caps are everywhere, not just in Philadelphia either. I saw a guy with a Phillies t-shirt jersey at the Preakness. Phillies fans have a tendency to own opposing team's stadiums while on the road. Yeah, I'm looking at you, Washington.

That's just the Phillies. I'd say Eagles fans are crazier. The only advantage the Phillies over the Eagles is a recent championship.

Flyers fans are passionate and Sixers fans are nonexistent.

San Diego. Hell locals look at me in shock and ask if the Padres/Chargers still play in this city when I tell them I'm heading to a game.

we come together to hate the stadium that was built in our town, because whenever there's a game, there's no parking anywhere in the town and all traffic comes to a standstill.

they actually enacted a new law this year to apply the "No Parking 8 am - 6 pm without a resident sticker" rules to also apply to 1 hour before/after a game at the stadium.

I'm in downstate IL so it's a bit scattered. A decent Chicago Bear following and an even split between Cubs/Cards. Illini basketball is pretty popular but nothing like prior towns I lived in.

Go to Iowa City, Madison or Omaha/Lincoln and see how those towns rally around their colleges. It's an awesome energy that isn't replicated by professional sports.

My previous city and hometown, Pittsburgh sure as hell does.

Just not for the Pirates, but I'm sure they would if they stopped sucking.

That's because that is all those cities have, ever. Ever.

Not any more. Hell, some people even stopped posting in the NBA playoff thread.

You say it like it's a bad thing. It's not. It's actually quite awesome and something that I really, really miss being where I am now.

Probably the closest you get to it professionally is Green Bay with it's very small town atmosphere and family oriented, loyal fan base.

Yes -- various pep rallies are held around town, companies usually have their employees dress in team colors the day before a big game, and some of the taller buildings unfurl signs on top.
