Does Your CD-RW whine? My Lite-On 40x does.

I just installed my Lite-on 40x CD-RW drive and I notice it makes a high pitched whine during operation. Not constantly, but certainly when the drive is being sped up and sped down. And maybe during routine operation, although I'll need to use it more to be sure. And it's not loud, but loud enough to be heard and be a bit annoying.

Is a high pitched whine normal for all CD-RW? All Lite-on CD-RW drives? All CD-RW of this speed?

I see from other posts that LG CD-RW are considered the quietest. I wonder if it would be a better option for someone easily annoyed by whining, like me.

Thanks for your thoughts!

hehe.. not sure.. not sure... i have Liteon 24x, it whines about 1-2 weeks after i installed it.. after that, it stops.

and btw, my friend's TDK 40x also does the same.

I have numerous CD-RWs including a Lite-On 48x, 52x, and a LG 40x. LG is really quiet (can't hear anything) while a Lite-On is as loud as a garbage truck on a Sunday morning. Do I prefer a LG CD-RW? Not really as I frequently have 4 computers running simultaneously in one room. If you're noise-sensitive, then definitely get a LG CD-RW, otherwise, Lite-Ons are a great value.

I have a new Liteon 16x/48x DVD drive and it really whooshes when it spins up, but that seems to be it. I guess I don't usually notice CD-drive noises though, as I expect them. Those discs are spinning incredibly fast, so some air turbulence and the resulting noise is to be expected. I guess some drives might better at dampening it though.
I have an Acer 50x, and without its case on, it makes a good bit of wind and noise; if I put the case back on, I do hear a high whine. When it spins up, it starts low, and then increases in frequency to a whine. As with the Liteon DVD drive, I just attribute it to the high speeds of the disc, coupled with minor surface imperfections that cause the turbulence.

I have a 48x12x48x Lite-On Burner and it's always as quiet as a mouse. I've had it about 3 months and do moderate amounts of burning with it (burned about 150 CD's total with it). If you read the reviews they mention a range of volumes from "quite noisy" to "a bit noisy" to "relatively quiet". I suspect it's a YMMV sort of thing.

I'm just fussy, so I ordered an older Lite-on CD-RW, a 32x. I'll give that a try. The reviews at cdrlabs started labeling the Lite-on drives as noisy beginning with 40x.

Thanks for the feedback!

My Lite-ON 48x burner is not the quietest....but then it's not particularly noisy.....it's noisier than my HP 8x burner at work but quieter than my Lite-ON 16x DVD.
