<< Does your car run Linux? >>

Anand asks a question that just got me intrigued...

Now, next summer (when I get my license) my sister is gonna be away so she won't need her car for a few months (traveling abroad and taking a year off after college) so I get her Red, '92 Saab w/ sun roof...what if I decked out the glove compartment or the big space in front of the "function area" (ya know...P, R, N, D, 2, 1...I dunno wtf it is called...its automatic so I dunno the term) with a lil computer and had a fan blowing out into the car so as to prevent overheating or anything (as that area is pretty insulated...) and took an i-opener screen and put that in the car...whoa.

That would be sweet...watching the matrix at red lights...LMAO! "Well officer, no, I didn't see how fast I was going, I was too busy playing Quake 3..."

Maybe a smaller screen would be good so I don't get distracted and can listen to mp3s... ;)

Heh...

Yeah, Linux installed ok, I just can't get my network configured from the Prelude:(.

I know in Oklahoma you get a HUGE ticket for being on a laptop while driving... really stupid law.

You must be proud. Now you can crash your car while you crash your computer.

lol, actually, I'm running windows me. And while I love lunix and all, I love my winamp and dvd software just the same.

And if you think it's all that nuts having a computer in your car, you really ought to check out www.mp3car.com, this has been going on for years.

Just to know that, depending on where you live, the computer will crash in the summer for sure, when every since piece of metal and non-metal inside the car gets sizzling hot. Every single trace on the MB will be burning hot without being turned on.

I think the whole computer in car thing will really take off when HUDs (heads up displays) become cheaper and more available. That will let drivers do stuff while keeping focus on the road. Until then, it's really more of a novelty.

beat mania,

You would think that would be the case. Very few people that have done this have had troubles with overheating. As for mine, it's a custom built plexiglass case that is well ventilated and keeps the air moving. If you want to see for youself go to here.

Why do you think I say this? my computer just wouldn't work in the summer if I leave it in the car. Damn thing won't even POST.

How hot does it get at your place? I don't see how well ventilated can matter in my case, unless I hook up the fan to the car battery and let it run even when the engine's off. As I said, it gets hot just by being inside a car under the sun.

Luckily mine is only about thw size of a laptop (no its not a laptop) so its easy to carry.
I replaced it with the Nomad Jukebox now and its all good (so far) :p
