Does your arm pop/crack when you extend it?

When you extend your arm, does it crack or pop? I've noticed in the past couple of months that mine has been doing this, but only my right arm. This happens to be the more active arm when playing guitar, and the arm I use for hook punches and other 'powerful' hits in boxing. Do you think this screwd upness has anything to do with working out? It's really starting to get annoying. I can hear a little click when i extend it, but if I leave it for a while and then suddenly throw it outwards, it pops quite loudly. It's like ... I don't know how to explain it, but my left arm doesn't do it. Could curling weights mess up your arm? I always recall being careful not to fully extend the arm when curling weights though, cause I heard it could mess you up. I've never actually injured myself lifting weights, so I really don't know ... any suggestions? Should I just see a doctor?

I work out a lot and my arms don't pop too often. If it pops and hurts, I'd be concerned. Otherwise I'd just mention it to a doc next time you happen to see one.

hah hah, this guy has managed to tell us that he lifts weights, is a boxer, and plays guitar (all while posting regularly to AT (>4000) ). exagerration? ... possibly. Flagrant self-promotion?...maybe.

My elbows do this too. Sometimes just a little, but sometimes it can be LOUD. My wife was a little freaked out at first. :D It feels pretty good, actually.

RSI- you got to be extra careful with weights... you don't want to be that guy who can't do anything because he injured himself lifting. If you feel poping.. i'd recommend lightening the load or reevaluating your lifting form. There may be something you are doing wrong. You can never be too careful when it comes to your joints.

SpecialEd,

I don't feel the popping while lifting weights or boxing, but just when I'm not doing anything special and extend my arm like normal. It didn't do this before. It doesn't really hurt, but I know it isn't right.

Ok, so you assume by reading the posts that you have, that I do all that full time and that I'm a master at it all? Right. Posting regularly at AT cause I have a lot of posts? Right, I've started posting regularly at AT in the past couple of weeks. Before then I hadn't posted at all for several months, which was when I was doing my boxing and weight lifting. I haven't exaggerated anywhere, I don't think. I didn't say I was a goldengloves champion or a heavy weight champion or something stupid like that. I said I enjoy boxing. And that's the truth, I do - I find it fun, and get a good workout out of it. It's not hard to learn the basics and practice whenever you have access to some wraps and gloves and someone to practice with, which was basically a couple times a week at a friend's house. As for weight lifting ... I'm not lifting *now*, I am considering going to the gym at school right here, but I don't really like the gym, so I may just stick to pushups/situps at home.

And what's so unbelievable about me lifting weights, boxing and playing guitar, wtf man? Why do you feel the need to accuse me that I'm lying or something? Everyone else has provided nice/useful responses which I appreciate. I've got the majority of the day free every day. I have 2-3 classes/day right now (5 classes total, 19hrs a week). I finish at 2:30 on monday, I finish at 5:30 on tuesday and thursday, but I have a couple of breaks in between that last an hour and a half. I finish at lunch time on Wednesdays, and I finish at 2:30 on Fridays. Every day I have hours of breaks.

So, you find, that with this schedule, it's impossible for me to play guitar at home (hours free time there too), attend a gym 1-2hrs a day at school, and box after school and on weekends? God - even if I did all these things full time I'd STILL have free time and do fine in school. But I DON'T... It's how I've said it in the previous paragraphs. If I wasn't lazy, I'd do them all at the same time.

Maybe you find it hard to believe cause you couldn't or refuse to think you can do it? It's not that much.

Edit: And another thing. Self-promotion? I think not. What should I care of the opinions of hundreds of geeks? I don't, especially when I don't even know them in real life and probably never will. Additionally, my self-esteem isn't exactly super-high, so I usually don't speak very highly of myself (hence telling the truth and not exaggerating).

My elbow will crack once in a while, if I extend it fast enough.. also if I stretch my arms up, there's a good chance my shoulder will crack as well. It doesn't hurt..but I'm kinda wondering what exactly is going on in there...lol

My right shoulder tends to pop when I move it in a certain motion. Really sucks.. haven't figured out a remedy. It doesn't hurt or anything, but if it were to pop while exerting force, I think I could seriously hurt myself.

Yes, you should be extremely offended, and you should cry too! Cry until your face is lined with marks from hours of tears pouring down your face (which is full of nasty zits and a huge pair of glasses)!

...... :p :D I'm kiddin', yo :p

Well after all,

If you are here,

Doesn't that make you a geek too?

Or do you just hang around to feel smart?

Ha ha. I actually think my arm cracks more from being on a computer than all the hardcore army stuff I've done. Think about it, your elbow is constantly bent and at a weird angle...it's gotta be bad for you

Haha... I saw this coming from a mile away! I was just poking fun at the 'geek' stereotype. No, I don't consider myself a 'geek', even if I know tons about computers and am a member to a computer tech site. Big deal. I spend the majority of my time away from computers, so.. yeah.

My arm has never cracked from computer usage, and I've never had any computer-related self injuries (computer has been injured/destroyed of course!). Don't even try to tell me that computers are more hazardous to your health than sports are!

Mine does a lot whenever I'm taking tests - I usually have my arms around/near my face and whenever I extend it fully, my elbow pops. (Popping as in like popping a knuckle) Never had it happen while lifting weights. Oh and why not fully extend your arm when curling? That's the equivalent of not going parallel to the ground during squats, or only going halfway up on bench presses, or only halfway down on tricep pushdowns....etc. (You get the idea) The exact reasoning I"m not sure but I think it has to do with working your slow-twitch fibers.

Both mine do. But so does my wrist, ankle, knee, and thumb. I think I'm weird......

I heard that it's bad to over-extend your arm when curling weights, cause it's at the extremity of your arms flexibility or something. Just a better chance of causing injury. It's not the equivalent of not going parallel to the ground during squats... at least I don't think it is. You should extend your arm as much as possible but just not 100% of the way. Enough so that your muscles get maximum workout but not enough to damage anything but the weight tugging on your arm all the time. If you're curling a really heavy amount of weight, it could be pretty bad for your arm if you over-extend it.

:< I can crack my arm right now if I wanted to...I've jumped out of planes, carried 60 pounds of weight on my back for 20 miles at a time, practiced hankido, and I work out 5 times a week and have never had anything bad happen to my arms because of any of it...

I am lightened up enough. :)

Didn't mean to sound aggressive, just had to give my view/opinion.
