Apologies for bringing back a slightly older thread.

I recently got my 2405, but while looking for info on the 2407 I ran into this Japanese site comparing eyestrain among some LCD monitors. The tests are subjective and the guy explains that he is by no means an expert on this, but the tests are interesting and they have been supported by 2 1000+ post threads on the hardware section of 2ch forums (Japan's giant anonymous BBS community). It lists the 2405 as being made of LG's S-IPS panel, and there's quite a few people reportedly having trouble with these, even after brightness adjustments have been made. The primary argument seems to be that the way the RGBs are coming out, and the slight unevenness of the brightness among them, cause a slight glittering effect (they called it "giratsuki" "giragira" on that page) that can have an effect on your eyes focusing in on, say, text on a white bg.

Of course on the other hand, there are plenty of users that've come out with no problems using these panels; the relatively few postings about problems with 2405's show that. I'm still deciding whether I'm going to keep the monitor or not, as though I do have good eyesight I've had a few instances where I suddenly couldn't get my eyes focused properly when I used another LCD panel for a prolonged period of time. I really like the size of the monitor, so I'm trying to see if changing color schemes on the desktop and webbrowsers to mostly black bg on light text would help (in addition to brightness adjustments).

If that is the case, then maybe that explained my eye strain issue with this monitor. I returned it and am patiently waiting for the 2407. I hear it has a different panel than the 2405. Hope so anyway, as Dell offered me an extra 100 bucks off to keep it !!!

Don't blame Dell for setting the brightness high enough to fry your retinas. Every tv in Circuit City has its brightness set to max (the better to lure you over from across the store) and people complain if their monitors didn't have comparable brightness out of the box.

Exactly the same for me!!!

I'm using the brightness around 20-25 and gamma corrected to 0.80. That makes the contrast even better and it is easier on the eye, specially when the room is dark.

I'm very sensitive to monitors and had 0 problems with this one. The 1905FP is also OK for me (just ghosting issues).
