does xp pro require more memory than xp home

i have a laptop here that someone put xp pro on. it has 512 mb memory which i know is ok for basic things in xp home but on this machine with xp pro the hard drive seems to grind continuously. is that because xp pro requires more than 512 mb memory or is it doing this for some other reason.

I don't think XP Pro needs more ram than XP Home, unless there are some services that are only installed with XP Pro, which is possible. But XP Pro should run fine in 512MB of RAM, depending on your applications.

No. You have some other kind of issue. You might want to check the task manager to see if anything odd is running in the background or using more resources than normal.

Require? No. But 2GB makes it run a little faster, and that would apply to Pro and Home. Your system may be thrashing due to indexing service. This is heavy until the initial index is built. That applies also to Vista and Windows 7.

If you don't do a lot of file searching, you can disable indexing.
