Does XP OEM use product activation...

because I know my dads dell came with an xp cd that doesnt, so I am looking to purchase xp oem and a mobo from an online store(its legal might I add, as its purchased with hardware). Am curious whether it uses that annoying activation or not?

MS provided many OEM's with versions that don't require activation as they are tied to the specific motherboard. Dell and others didn't want the additional support cost of people asking 'how do I activate'. (MS's stated goals where to reduce piracy of the versions sold in stores, so this fits into that goal as the restore disks aren't gonna work on another system anyhow).

Yeah, I got a sony laptop recently that came preinstalled with xp home...and it did not prompt me to activate or anything.

FYI, I bought a shop-built PC last month that came pre-loaded with XP (OEM). It still required activation on my part...
