DOes XP come with Microsoft word?

Well, i bult my first computer. BUt, when I went in to type a document, i realized taht i didnt have microsoft word. My question is, does word come with xp? And, if so, what didn't I do during installation to get it to install?

No, it does not. Windows includes WordPad, which provides some basic document writing capabilities. You'll need to purchase a copy of Word or Office separately.

Isn't it mind boggling that Uncle Bill decries that a browser, where he had some competition, is an inherent part of an OS and needs to be included, but the word processor, which probably every computer has installed, is not.

Only mind boggling to think a web browser (a low level internet function, that has only a few basic
modes for interaction) is the same thing as a word processor (a tool for creating and manipulating
ideas, that covers a much larger frame of reference for the ways it can be used, and the types
of people who might use it).

And not "every computer" has, or needs one, no more than every computer needs to be
a web server.

Like I said, WordPad is built into the OS and provides basic word processing capability. You can easily write a letter, resume or book report using WordPad if you need to.

This ain't linux bubbs. You got to pay for Microsoft services. Although, I will say Microsoft has put out some of the best software, at least as it relates to Corel. This comment was only for Windows OS and for no other (i.e. Linux). I however got a copy of Office XP Pro for $30 at college and can get Office 2003 Pro for $30. I don't mind paying a little for service but I do agree end users get screwed when it is $400 for such a suite: as in the price stores sell it at.

I would personally recommend you use Openoffice.org, it is superior to Word in many apsects. e.g
it compresses the files using xml
very intuittive
help is extremely helpful
great community to which you can ask for help
it allows you to convert your file to a pdf
it supports more formats than word
it's available for different platforms
