Does Xeon CPU work on regular desktop motherboard?

I recently got a Xeon X5570 for cheap. I wonder if I can buy a desktop motherboard and just use it as a Core i7 CPU? I don't want to spend too much on motherboard. For example, Asus P6T or P6T deluxe will work?

I believe you would need a special board for this type of cpu. I dont think regular boards were made for server class cpu.

I was wondering how you could do this too. I've seen some deals on some dual Xeon servers.

nah those boards don't support ECC - xeon's run ecc to memory to bus etc. some low end workstation xeon's used to be able to work in standard mobo's but the new ones are far more complex X5570 is quite a nice cpu to pick up for cheap ;)

Incredible CPU you just picked up!

It will work on specially approved X58 boards which are designed to support Xeon /ECC memory! (in addition Core i7)

The board you want is the ASUS P6T WS Pro, but there are others as well!

I've run a Xeon in my Asrock x58 Extreme with ECC ram no problem. It all depends on the board and BIOS support.

Yea, all depends on the BIOS support. I got a L5640 running on my X58 UD5, but it won't let me overclock it.

I know, but P6T WS Pro is like $100 more than P6T. I want to be cheap:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Even though this doesn't specifically apply to your CPU & its also been said - I've also seen numerous boards with Xeon support. When updating my own bios I've seen "added xeon xxxx CPU support" to the list of updates.

As its been said, its all about board/bios support. Though most boards would probably at least boot okay - but may not autodetect the right multiplier/fsb (775)/vcore.

Yeah I think you pretty much have to have ECC memory because of the memory controller now integrated on the XEON chip.

You have some flexibility as far as motherboard choice, like Gillbot said he got his ASSRock x58 Extreme working with one so check around.

I used my Xeon with non-ECC also. I don't think Xeon's require ECC but that may depend on the model.

You can run that Xeon without ECC memory... you should just make sure you have BIOS support.

Just tried a 5645 in an MSI X58M (mATX); works fine with 3x4GB Wintek Registered ECC. It dis NOT work with the original BIOS (3/2009), as I'd expected, since the 5645 is a Westmere CPU.
