Does WMV work the same for everyone?

I'm using windows and when i click on a WMV file, it opens up windows media player and plays/streams. Does that also work in Macs and linux machines? I don't really use Macs but does Quicktime(i assume) also open and plays wmv files like mediaplayer? Looking for a MOST universal format.

I'd assume so, aslong as you used those programs with the linux/mac version though.

Most universal format is MPEG or MPEG2. All the other formats require user-installed gunk.

when i open a WMV in firefox sometimes it just opens a bunch of jibberish in the browser window 🙁

Can't you jsut aget a codec for the Mac?

damn..i guess i need to use MOV then..isn't that what Macs use? How to encode in that?

mplayer plays wmv files with the "win32codecs" flags on. I'm not sure, but I think it's on by default.

oh..ok..didn't know they did that. but Macs come preinstalled with Quiktime right?
