does winXP update auto reboot the comp?

someone asked me this question because he noticed his comp rebooted after it ran auto update. its xp sp 2.
 
Yes, it does sometimes when a critical update is received. You have to have it set on auto to do that though.
 
lovely... his winxp machine is a default install... so i guess it was on by default.

anyways, have any idea on where i go to turn it off? i am lookin in the control panel > auto updates, but it only gives me options for scheduling or disabling updates... or should i set it to ask whenever an update is ready to install?

Yeah, your next option would be to tell it to download the updates, but ask you when to install them.

If you tell it to install them automatically, it will often reboot automatically as well, depending on the update.

If you have Windows XP Professional Edition, then you can also do Start > Run > gpedit.msc and then alter the settings located here.
