Does WinXP run DOS games?

I've been hearing a lot about Windows XP being able to run DOS games, with sound and everything. To a lesser extent, I've been hearing that this can be taken from WinXP and implemented in Win2K.

If that is true, then not even the activation crap will keep me away from XP! Can anyone confirm this?

I asked pretty much the same question here and got some positive responses 🙂

Looks like XP should be a really good OS for just about everything.
(Annoying activation aside...)

Thanks. I saw that thread earlier, but there were no replies that specifically said "Yes, DOS games work under Windows XP just as well as under Win9X", and that's what I wanted to know.

I downloaded the WinXP compatability thing (if anyone is still having trouble getting it, I can throw up an FTP), but I have not installed it yet. It looks like it's only for running Win32 apps and games that have poorly written OS detection code or use long dead APIs.

Well the winsupersite guy apperently had wolfenstien working 😉
don't get much older than that heheeh 😀

I didn't look into that much...but I assume that means we're good to go.

HansXP, you'd be suprised how many DOS games there are whose gameplay is unmatched to this day. Let's see...

  • Duke Nukem 1, 2, 3D
    Descent 1 & 2 (well, there's an open source Win32 port, but...)
    Doom and its spinoffs
    Wolf3d
Megarace 1 & 2 (does anyone else like those?)
    Carmageddon
    And so on...

Who can forget Commander Keen? I loved those games. Millenium was good too. And Elite. Privateer (1 and 2) were also aweseom (I know there's a Windows version of Privateer 2 but my copy is the original dos version). Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat ports . . . (the list goes on).

Yep gotta have my MAME games working. 🙂 They work great on 2000 but you can't use the DOS version. 😉

Actually I was talking about the actual PC ports, not the roms for MAME. They seem/seemed to work a little better for me. What would REALLY be nice is if WinXP could cause my USB gamepad to emulate on of the old analog pads.

OMG Electrode, I spent far too many 1000's of hours playing those games. True classics. Unequalled to this day 🙁
