Strange as it sounds this can happen. I know it may sound stupid having to re-install the OS after a simple ram upgrade.
It happened to me on a dell (office machine) running windows 2000. it came with a whooping 128 ddr ram.
every time I tried to increase the ram to 256 (2 sticks of 128 or a single 256 stick) it would blue screen at boot up.
I could not figure it out until someone from this forum suggested reinstalling w2k and lo and behold I can use any combination 1 stick 2 sticks 256 ram.
Just my 2 cents if it can happen to w2k it can happen to XP since they are fairly similar.
I'd run memtest and check the RAM. Bad RAM would cause blue screens. I have added and subtracted RAM to Windows XP/2000 machines dozens of times with no problems. Unless there is a serious problem with the install in the first place, Windows (none of them) require a reinstal for a simple RAM upgrade.
ussually thats a sign your pc won't run at all with taht memory in. happened with my laptop. i tried formating etc, that was a waste of time. your comps telling you that ram ain't goin in.
