Does Windows XP run all Win98 software?

I am considering an operating system change from Win ME and just wanted to be sure that all my favorite games will still work. Can I expect a performance increase? More stability?

Comments Appreciated

It might help to list the games. Old DOS games, will likely not be very happy in XP.

There is no guarantee everything will work, but hell anything is an upgrade from Win9X.

Especially ME. I attended a 1/2 day Technet conference on Tuesday. Thought it was very amusing that the instructor made a comment in his Powerpoint presentation of how bad ME was.

Everything will probably be okay. Of course no guarantees, but most all software within the past few years will work. Some software may require a little work with the Compatability Wizard to get working correctly. This extra work is well worth it to get away from a 9x based system. And I have personally found that many DOS based games (Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Redneck Rampage) have worked, after some tweaking with the CW.

[EDIT]Anything is more stable than Windows ME. Windows XP is extremely stable.

Worst comes to worst, just run the program's exe file in Win XP's "Compatibility Mode" :D Works Great for me so far!!

The ones you may have problems with are old DOS based games, and games that specifically check for Windows NT and throws an error message if you're running it.
WinXP is NT 5.1.

Only sure way to know is through a trial and error process. But for the most part you should not have problems.

the only exe files that I can be sure to have problems with are hybrid win95/dos executables (see C&C red alert 2) those mostly require a whole list of tweaks to get working but you can check all yer titles of games out at http://www.ntcompatible.com/
