Does Windows XP retail version require activation?

In the past retail versions of Windows software could legally be uninstalled from one computer and installed on another computer. Is this still the case? If so, do these versions still require activation? If so, what is the point of activation for these retail versions? My question applies to both the full versions and upgrade versions of Windows XP.

You must activate XP, and as such, it's limited to one computer. You can call MS if you get a new computer and replace the old one, but you're only supposed to have XP on ONE system (as with every other software program).

This, of course, depends on the actual software license. MOST software is registered for just one machine, but not 'every' software.

Actually, they let you install WinXP on 2 computers. One laptop and one desktop. I've done it before so I speak from experience.

I installed it first on my desktop and then when I went to install it on my laptop, I had to call in. They told me I had already installed it and I said "I'm allowed to install it on a laptop too" and they said "yes" and gave me the code to input into my laptop.

By the way, you could just as easily claim that the second computer your trying to install it on is a "laptop" when it's really a desktop.
