Does Windows XP Pro stop working if you don't register?

I have heard after 30 days, or some set time period if you do not register Win xp, it will stop working. Is this true and how can you avoid that?
 
It stops working if you don't activate it, registering is totally optional.

And you can't legally avoid it, if you bought it it's not a problem.
