Does weight-lifting affect vertical growth?

my dad is always bitching how I always lift weights and he always tells me to stop lifting weights so I can grow.

Is it true that weight-lifting at a relatively early age (i'm 18 years old) may slow or somehow affect my height and vertical growth?

thanks

No, all the stubby little body builders are just making up for getting shafted on height.

I heard that if you do it when you're younger, the body spends more energy building your muscle mass and less on growth? Seems plausible but im not sure if it's right

if you do it when you're younger, it can. Reason is, because if muscle grows around the bones, it doesn't let the bones grow. At age 18, you should be fine

I didn't stop growing until I was 20. I never had a quick growth spurt, I grew slow until the time I was 20.

Maybe if you're really young, but even then probably not. It just makes no sense really; how could it affect it?

In any case at your age no. Your dad is being a pecker. Even from sources that say it can, I've not seen one recommend waiting past 18.

cool. thanks for the reply.

here's my next question: until what age do men usually grow up to? I'm 18 right now, and I'm still shorter than my dad. am I going to grow more?

also, are there any exercises or a particular diet that can help my growth?

thanks

Some guys hit a growth spurt between when they are 18 and 21 or so. I remember them making a big deal about Dennis Rodman's growth spurt when he was in college during the championship years at Detroit prior to losing his mind.

Most of the time though, you've pretty much grown as much as you are going to by the time you've reach 18.

Yeah. I'm three inches shorter than my dad. Sucks, but oh well. Mrsskoorb's dad hit a growth spurt in his mid 20's or something silly, but generally 18 or so and you're done...another couple years tops, if you're lucky.

Weight lifting at a young age won't stunt your growth. Steroids will.

I was done growing by 18/19. An uncle of mine supposedly grew an inch at age 22, but that's somewhat unusual. As for what to eat, as long as you're maintaining enough weight and bodyfat to keep your hormonal levels normal, I'm not sure what more you can do.

It's possible some bodybuilders are short because they started doing steroids before they were fully grown... anabolic steroids can/do cause premature closure of growth plates.

You've got maybe an inch left in you; it's not going to affect you a whole lot.

It does have an effect on younger people however, which is why many gyms have age limits.

Well I stopped growing about the same time I started jerking off, so I must assume all the "weight lifting" must have been the cause.

I guess this is the down side of having such a HUGE member... ;)

You're most likely not going to grow any more, although I wouldn't throw out the idea of you possibly growing some more until you're in your early 20s. They say on average the male child is about 3 inches taller than his dad. If you're shorter than your dad, blame your mom.

So, you stopped growing when you were 13?

Maybe, it could have been 11 or 12.

I WAS a long time ago! ;)
