Does weather affect cable internet?

I don't know how I put up with this last summer.

Ever since it got warm outside the internet goes out a little bit after noon and stays out until about 9:30pm when it starts to cool off outside. It's about to die right now.. it's lagging horribly.

The cable runs through mud under our porch before going into the house. Charter refuses to replace/fix it because it is owned by my neighborhood and is not their equipment. The neighborhood association tells me it's charter's equipment and refuse to touch it.

Last summer I must have made 7 or 8 services calls to charter, 6 of the times they didn't show up after staying home from work, the couple times they did come, the internet just so happened to be working and they treated me like I was wasting their time. (then after they leave it goes out.. heh)

I'm moving within the next month to a brand new neighborhood, hopefully the problem does follow me.

You wishing a life of misery on yourself?:D

This stuff happens all the time, my brother ended up getting DSL just because they would never fix the problem.

So, who do you pay each month for the service, Charter or your association?

I don't know about cable, but it definitely affected 56k. My speeds would get reduced when the sun was fully out, or if it were raining.

could be bad cabling and the techs for some reason hate to run it. I had comcast out to my house several times and they assured me my home run was fine and the splitters were good.

I finally gave up on snowy picture and blacked out stations. Most of the stations seemed more like a VCR than digital.

My home run had 4 splices in it, the first came right out as soon as I pulled the cable. I had an 8 way splitter for 4 lines with two having broken off terminations. My master bedroom was split to my guest room and my other bedroom had a splitter put in to extend the cable.

A few hours of my time and my picture is DVD quality.

Is this specific to after it rains? You may have a punctured line.

And no... Weather shouldn't affect cable internet.

Yeah, it has been raining quite often these last couple weeks.. and last year when this was happening I believe it was rainy as well.

My nextdoor neighbor use to have cable.. but they switched to dsl because of 'connection issues'.

My neighborhood is practically a retirement home.. everyone is like 60+. I don't believe there to be anybody capable of mass p2p.

I pay charter for the service. They association is just here to collect money and not actually do anything to fix the neighborhood. (our foundation is sinking.. the entire house is slightly slanted).. they fixed our neighbors.. but refuse to fix ours..

Man I can't wait to get out of this place.

When I was in college, my buddies and I had a problem when it rained. After numerous calls, a technician came out and found a squirrel nest in a "box" that was serving the area with internet service. When it rained, the water would come in through the opening the squirrel used and would take out service. I didn't see this first hand, but thats what the tech said the problem was. They came back out a few days later to do some repairs and we didn't have any issues after that point.

The general concensus on this thread is that normally cable shouldn't be affected by weather, but in cases where the system is not properly protected from the elements it is possible to have problems during certain types of weather.

its not a problem with cable internet. Weather has no bearing on it.

Its the cables and connectors and splitters that are the problem.

The good thing here about having a cable monopoly is that they own the lines, period. When I had similar issues, Rogers came out and replaced all the outside lines and used proper weather proof connectors. Everything was perfect after that.

I think I fixed it!

Out back, there is a three-way cable splitter. 2 of the outputs where -7db and one was -9db. (or the other way around.. 2 -9 and 1 -7.. can't remember) I switched the cables so that mine was on the unique output and my internet came right back on. (cant remember if it was -9 or -7.. whichever one that there was only 1 of)

Somebody else probably just lost their internet.. I delt with it all last summer so screw em. They might just have tv though.. not internet. (my tv is always fine.. only internet goes out)

I'll see how this goes. It was this simple and the asshats from charter couldn't figure it out last summer.

I'm resourceful, and I have resourceful friends, with resourceful landscaping tools, and trucks. If I were you, I'd tear out the entire neighborhood's cable run before moving out, then you get to really find out "who's equipment" it is :p

It's common that many times non-weatherproof connectors are the culprit. I use them exclusively.

Usually weather related phone/cable problems are due to connectors or deteriorated cable jackets.

My Dad had a similar problem with his internet access (Surewest in Sacramento). Turned out that heat was causing a bad cable end to expand enough that it would create some kind of short and kill the connection. Surewest fixed the cable and it has worked fine ever since.

The cable company generally has to come out twice a year for internet, TV, or both going out randomly, then finally for good.

It's generally either:
Wires in the cable box melted and had to be replaced.
Extreme heat during the day and the cooling at night caused the cable lines to expand/contract, and because the cable was too tight it caused it issues.
Wires getting loose from wind or squirrels playing on it.
