I always kept the Resource Meter running in the Systray with 98. Does W2K have anything like it? I can't find it if there is one.

I'm not sure that is exactly what they're looking for, but I will give you a tip. If you hit Ctrl-Shift-Esc, it will bring up the task manager. Instead of having to click the taskmanager button everytime you hit Ctrl-Alt-Del.

"Resource" monitoring is Not necessary. Win9x has limited resource stacks, but NT has so much it never becomes a problem.

obenton -- that was sort of what I was fishing for. I've used ResourceMeter in 95 and 98 as a warning - when it got to yellow, I knew to keep an eye on it. I often have lots of big stuff running, and it helped. I just installed W2KPro for the first time and automatically looked for my familiar helper and .. ???

I read some in a book on Operating Systems a year ago, and though it was over my head, it was so interesting -- I got an idea of what a process is, etc. One of the things I learned was the idea behind ResourceMeter, which I gather is needed to track the resources eaten up by the processes running. And yes, it was in terms of a special area of memory reserved for process management, not simply the total RAM in use. Something like that.

So you're telling me that the available memory for whatever RM tracked is much bigger now, and I really don't need to worry any more? There must be a system limit somewhere, of course.

Thanks

Sounds like a great idea to continue what your used too doing.-> watching available resources (i did the same thing for a few weeks after installing w2k on my laptop 2 years ago.)

After the resource nightmare that IS Win95/98/98se it's hard to blame anyone for keeping an eye on that stuff. However, you will soon learn Win2000 is light-years ahead of Win98 when it comes to releasing resources, chances are after a few weeks you'll stop looking at the new meter altogether.

If you are worried about resources getting critical, don't use task manager use performance monitor instead. It can be found under computer management, as an mmc snap-in or by running perfmon.exe from the start | run menu.

Set a flag or two on your resources and it will alarm if something gets low. Check the help files for more info - you'll find windows 2000 help files to be really good. (especially server :)

Looked into PerfMon, got lost in stuff I just don't know enough about. Fun, though. Always more to learn some day.

If you're willing, Smilin, what flags would come closest to the stuff that Resource Meter tracked for me? Again, I had only a rough idea what that was anyway.
