Does Vtec really kick in?

I keep seeing the honda guys talk about it despite all the mockery of it over the interweb. So there must be something or is just psychosomatic yo?

Yea, have you ever been in an S2000? When Vtec kicks in that little jump does put a smile on your face and for sure can be fun when driving on a track.

On most of Honda's VTEC engines it seems to kick in at 4500rpm. It definitely makes the engine roar and gives a decent power boost.

I wouldn't mind flashing my computer chip so that my VTEC kicks in at lower RPMs so I get more power. I think it would be great at 3000rpm.

"Roar" and "Honda" don't typically go together.

I doubt your engine is flowing enough at 3000rpm to make use of the other cam profile.

I've driven a few hundred miles in a 2005 Lotus Elise and you can definitely feel when the variable valve timing kicked in on that engine...then again, a Civic is quite a bit heavier and not tuned as well as a Lotus Elise.

I'd rather have a flat torque curve that peaks at 300 ft. lbs. than a boost at 3800rpm up to 155. Just my 2 cents.

I like mine..this isn't my own car personally, but it's a similar setup...very nice for daily driving.

yep definitely kicks in, mine has two engagement points, so i frequently hit the lower one when getting to freeway speeds

i only hit the other one if i floor it

On classic VTEC implimentations you can really feel it. On later systems, such as iVTEC, it's much smoother and not as noticable, but you still hear it howl mroe than regular running. It's a howl, not a 'roar'.

I used to have a '99 1.6 VTEC, one of the original motors with the performance oriented VTEC, only produced 160hp, but it was fun and made an addictive noise. It was very binary.

I drove a Prelude once and can say that it definitely turned on and off. Annoyingly so because I had to keep shifting to keep it out of the gutless and screaming ranges.

Not true, but most manufacturers have such a system that they provide with one of their engine ranges.
