Does volunteer experience help when it comes to landing a job?

I'm really interested in switching from IT support over to cyber crime investigations and prevention. Unfortunately I don't have any experience in law enforcement but I do have about 10 years of experience with computers. I was thinking of maybe volunteering with a few cyber watch organizations (private and goverment) to get a little experience and something extra to add on to my resume.

Does anyone know if this will help in interviews? Does it matter if I've only volunteered for a few weeks?

Of course it will help... Just because you didn't get paid for it doesn't mean that you don't have the experiance.

Any related experience will help, doesn't matter if you were paid or not
