Does using an onboard header for front panel sound disable the rear speakers output?

I changed cases today. My new on has a front panel plug for headphones, which I was eager to hook up. My P4P800 has a header on the mobo for front panel sound, so I hooked it up. It works just fine. The only problem is that my speaker output on the back of the mobo doesn't appear to work now. If I want to use my speakers I have to plug them into the front panel.

While not a big deal, I wonder if it is normal? Any ideas?
