Does upgrading a motherboard

I want to upgrade my MB but I'm not sure if I'd have to reinstall windows cleanly which would be a huge PITA.

Even if you remove all the MOBO drivers, etc., 9 times out of 10 it will not boot. But 9 times out of 10 that can be fixed. But why in the world would you want to subject yourself to that mightmare? It really depends on the chipsets involved, so I would assume, that if you have to ask the question, reformatting/reinstalling is for you.

I went from a via kt800? to a p35 board and haven't had any issues after 2 months. A boatload of programs were installed on it as well. On the initial couple boots, I use safemode only and that helps the OS installswitch the right drivers before any extemporaneous programs try and run. I'd image the system partition and try it without reinstalling everything first, and if it doesn't work out, you can revert to the backup image and then reinstall the OS.

You definetly may encounter issues when booting to the OS. Safemode is a possibility. Depending on which Windows you are running, there are system recovery options available when you boot to the CD/DVD. Vista includes a very robust recovery environment; XP is not as robust. You may be able to install the needed drivers through that. I have never attempted such a task, so I can't say for sure. I personally would just reload the computer.
