Does upconverting DVD player make a big difference?

I just got a 42" HDTV and was wondering how big of a difference an upconverting DVD player will make w/ movies.

Not that big. I have a 50'' plasma and don't think it's really that great. But then again, I haven't watched non-upconverted DVD in about three years, so I don't have anything to really compare it to 🙂

No, not really. It lacks the features a scaler would include to really clean and sharpen an image. I personally use a HTPC with Zoomplayer and ffdshow and it beats any upconverting dvd player you could get under a grand. Now over a grand there are some options.

It depends alot on the scaler that's already built into the tv. If the tv already has a good scaler then you'll notice little or no difference. You may get some improvement, though, if the dvd player has a pure digital DVI output by eliminating a D-A and A-D conversion step.
