Does Unison not list Binaries for Usenet?

I am gonna get a Giganews account to *ahem* download things, and I did a trial of Unison. It seems like it has no binaries list and just has random alt. groups. Is there a way to add in all the power a usenet service like Giganews gives you into Unison or shold I buy a different client.

CLIFFS: Looking for a good OS X Usenet client for downloading stuff. Is Unison the best?

I personally don't like any of the Usenet clients for the Mac. I ended up using GrabIt in conjunction with WINE.

I use VMWare Fusion in Unity mode and run Newsbin Pro, as well as QuickPar and 7-Zip (just in case). I suggest you do the same - it's a pretty good solution. Oh and I'm also using Giganews 🙂

Unison is the best it gets for Mac, but it's still quite a ways behind Newsbin Pro. If you have a decent NZB service (NewzBin, NZB Matrix), then there's no need to mess with all the groups in Unison. That's about your best bet. I didn't like Unison's lack of internal rar support, poor multithreading, and (last time I checked) it couldn't support all 20 connections from Giganews. This made me go through the trouble of getting Newsbin Pro to work on VMWare Fusion, but it's totally worth it.

Hope this helps.

Weird, I'm able to download binaries on Unison, and I have all the same alt.binaries groups as I have in Grabit in Windows.

yes well... 1st rule of newsgroups... 😉

What is this alt.binaries that you speak of? It doesn't exist... it... doesn't exist...

I really like the way Unison works with binaries, actually - it's the only newsreader I use. I do find that the "search groups" feature is borked, though, so I end up using Google to find the appropriate group once in a while (not a major issue since the overwhelming majority of my binaries come from a single group, alt.binaries.howard-stern.

You should have a subscription to NewzBin and Unison works wonderfully with NZBs. Then you want UnRarX and MacPar installed, and after the download, you open any par2, it will check, and auto unrar the files as necessary.

NewzBin doesn't take subs anymore 🙁

Did I not just say 7 posts ago that it's open on an invitation-only basis? 😛
