Hi all. I have purchased a UDMA 100 IBM deskstar HD. It did not come with a IDE cable. Can I use the old cable off my old UDMA33 hard drive or use a different type?? If i use the old one will it limit the HD performance to only 33. Can i buy a UDMA100 cable??? Er, I'm comfused??😕

yeah, you can use the old one, but it may not work up to ata66 or 100. you can get buy 'till you buy an 80 conductor, ata100 cable.

They should be easily obtained.

Main difference:

40 ribbon cable => ATA/33 (only)
80 ribbon cable => ATA/33, ATA/66, ATA/100

They should be both the same or near-same, price-wise.

The 80 ribbon ide cables are actually the only ones sold retail in my area. So I'm hoping they are easily obtained if you don't want to get them over the internet.

Is your mobo UDMA66/100 capable? If its only a UDMA33 mobo, the cable wont make a difference. If it is a UDMA66/100 mobo, be sure to get an 80 wire IDE cable.
