How does nomination work for existing presidents if they choose to run a second term?

He's 70. He will be 74 when he is ending his first term. He'll be 78 when he would be ending his 2nd term. I don't think he'll run for a 2nd term.

Also, once the American people realize that they voted Sarah Palin, Ben Carson, Rudy Guliani, Chris Christie, Newt and a whole bunch of other clowns from the clown-train in office, they will not vote Republican en mass again in 2020.

I beg to differ, Trump is an ego guy he will run again, no question about it. He also would like to hand it off to one of his kids. About that clown train its middle america that voted Trump in, all of the above are very popular in middle america.
The big question is will Trump be able to keep enough of his implied promises to get re-elected. Will Trump be able to explain ones that don't work. Trump is his own obstacle but so far he has shown he can get stuff done that nobody expects. Too early to tell and honestly I do hope I get tired of winning after 4 years.

I'm pretty sure other Republicans are free to go against him for the nomination if they wish, but custom dictates that they wouldn't.

I think what usually happens is that a few back benchers from the incumbant's party will run for the nomination, but a serious primary challenge to a sitting president is almost unheard of.

While I agree Trump is an ego guy, I think that this run for President is what his ego wanted. He never wanted to govern, hell he hasn't the slightest idea how. He's going to go in and realize how much work a President has to do, how miserable and thankless it is. He'll realize that unlike with his businesses, he can't just cut loose and declare bankruptcy when he runs things into the ground. He'll be satisfied that he will be remembered as President Trump, that for the remainder of his years he gets to be called President Trump.

He's not going to do any work, he'll get Pence to do it for him, and angrily order people to do what he wants. All the gray hairs the presidency put on Obama and Bush? That's because they actually cared about the country and felt the pressure of not letting the nation down. Trump doesn't give a fuck.
