Does this thing exist - what do you call it (grilling related)?

I have both a big and a small grill out back. I use the small one since I'm generally cooking just for me, and it saves charcoal. However, since its so small, whatever I'm grilling is VERY close to the flame, and can't cook slowly enough. Is there some contraption that I can stick on the grill, where I put the meat on the top of that contraption, where the heat from the coals can still get to the food, but it would just cook more slowly? I've been using upside-down aluminum pans to try this, but they cost like 30 cents each time I do it and don't work very well due to lack of surface area.

Thanks!

How big is the small grill? Do you know how to set up your grill for direct and indirect cooking? You can also get hinged grate and turn it upside down and place it on top of your existing grill. But it's amazing how many people don't know how to properly use a grill and set up charcoal for direct and indirect cooking.

Do you want open air or a griddle? Griddle - just get something like this:

Cast iron will stay hot and you can pull it off the grill if it gets too hot and it will hold temp for a good amount of time.

If your small grill doesn't have a height adjustment feature, then I would recommend buying 8 heat-safe bricks and a metal cooling rack. For a small height adjustment, put two bricks in a row length-wise on the left & two on the right of the grill rack & then put the metal cooling rack on top of that. For a larger height adjustment, stack the remaining bricks on top of the bottom bricks & then put the cooling rack on top of that.

W/O pic of your grill the direct/indirect method will work. After coals get hot pile on one side. Quick sear on coal side. Enough to get slight char but not burn. Move to non coal side cook until done. You will probably need to rotate bottom/top, left/right since right side will be hotter.

It may take a few steaks to get it totally right.

This looks very much like the one I have, very small:

https://www.amazon.com/Weber-10020-...d=1489601655&sr=8-3&keywords=small+grill&th=1

I guess what I'm looking for is a very small "grate" that is elevated just an inch or two via some metal stands underneath it - what way I could just set it on the existing grill, and the meat would be elevated (but I would still be able to close the lid, which I still want to do to get all-around cooking). The one preCRT posted seems like its in the right direction, but I don't think I could use it with my grill, at least not be able to close the lid with it.

Thanks!
