Does this sound "safe" for a computer assembly area?

2 choices:

1.) Garage with a cement floor. I'll build the machine on a metal desk with a formica top that is covered with a piece of wood. Each night before bed (if I haven't finished assembly) I'll cover the machine with an anti-static bag to keep dust to a min.

2.) A room in the house where I've already got a system running. The problem is, that the room is fully carpeted. So... I'd be sitting in a wooded chair situated on one of those plastic office chair mats. My "workbench" will be a metal card table with a vinyl top. I like the ideas of assembling in my house next to a computer with net access (for ease of help if something goes wrong), but I'm leary of zapping my components with static discharge.

I'm a noobie. Any comments would be appreciated.

Most of the time I'm sittin on the floor (carpeted). I plug the system I'm working on into a power strip but I turn the power strip off. That way the system is grounded but not "live", then I regularly touch the case to make sure I'm statically neutral.

I usually build my PCs on a carpeted floor and I've never zapped anything.

When building a PC just be sensible, touch the metal case every now and again, don't move around unnecessarily (you could trample something), don't have drinks near your PC, keep hectic dogs (and children) away etc etc.

Either sounds okay, however don't just take the environment into account.

Make sure you're well rested and there's plenty of viewing light available ;)

(I've leaned the hard and expensive way)

I do what Pederv does, but if you are that worried about it, just get a static wrist band and connect it to the metal leg of the table, or something like that.

Doing it inside is quite fine.
