Does this sound like the mobo, power supply or something else maybe?

I went to turn on my computer today but only the hard drive, and the fans would turn on. My usb devices wouldn't work, monitor wouldnt work and i noticed my cpu fan not spinning. I checked to see if the cpu fan was blocked but it wasn't.

I checked all the connections and everything looks to be in order. I plugged my cpu into another 4 pin fan header and that didn't work. I have an extra fan but it only requires 3 pins and not 4 like a cpu fan. But I plugged it into the cpu fan header and still nothing. I can only think it may be the cpu fan and since my mobo doesnt recognize a cpu fan it doesnt boot all the way, the mobo is shot or i need a new power supply.

Plug the 3 pin fan into any 3 pin fan connector, not the 4 pin cpu fan header. My experience is the system will boot ok, give you a cpu fan error, which can be disabled in BIOS. Not sure what mobo you have, but this works fine for an Asus P5K. No luck, mobo is first suspect! Any spare parts around?

I installed the ninja plus cpu cooler I had lying around (which by the way was a pain to install) but it didn't fix the problem. The fan on the cpu cooler wasn't 4 pins but I tried plugging it into the cpu fan header and it didn't work. I just plugged it into a regular fan header and it spun.

You can try reseating everything, and clearing CMOS. If you pull out the RAM or VGA, does it give POST errors?

I reset the cmos, nothing.

I tried hooking up a psu from a 4 or 5 year old HP i had lying around. I just hooked up the bare essentials and all i got was one very long beeeep before it powered down.

Scatch that thing about the extra psu. It won't work. My mobo doesnt have an onboard video and the psu doesn't have the proper wiring to hook my video card up so I won't be able to test it.

The beep is the mobo telling you there's a problem, which would be the VGA related if no power to the VGA. This is a good sign, it means the mobo is still alive. Try with the old PSU, and a single stick of RAM, pull the RAM and see if it POST errors again.

Well I would but I just realized my motherboard doesn't have onboard video and my old psu doesn't have the required wire to power my video card.

Your video card (if bought new) should've come with molex -> pci-e power adaptors. If not, you can probably buy some for a couple of bucks. If you can get your hands on some adaptors, you could try your old PSU with your video card plugged in.

The PSU that was using the whole tune works with my vga but the one that I switched out to test doesn't.

I bought a new psu today, It seemed to fix the problem with the CPU cooler but i am still getting no video. The psu i had before was 650w and the new one is 550w. I'm pretty sure the graphics card is getting power since the fan is running. Is it possible that the fan can run but still not recieve enough power to fully run?

Wait, you had a 650W psu and it didn't have pci-e connectors?

Your 8800 shouldn't be anywhere NEAR demanding enough to tax even a PSU half that size.

No, the psu I was using at the time my computer stopped working had all the right connectors. But the old psu that I took out from an hp desktop didn't.
